A burgundy shirt dress with gold-tone buttons down the front, a pleated waist and a ruffle hem that gives the skirt its movement. Relaxed short sleeves, a self-tie sash, and pockets in the seams. It also doesn't need ironing, which is not a small thing.
Material: recycled polyester — soft and fluid, and it comes out of the wardrobe ready to wear.
What you're probably wondering
Does it really not need ironing?
It really doesn't. The fabric falls out of the wardrobe ready and comes out of a suitcase without a crease — it's the one in the range we'd pack first. If you'd like to freshen it, a light steam is enough, but you won't need to.
Is it nursing friendly?
Yes. The buttons run the full length of the front and they work, so it opens properly rather than just at the collar. The sash unties and reties in a moment, and the pleated waist sits below the opening so nothing pulls out of shape.
Is it lined? Is it see-through?
It isn't lined, but it isn't sheer either — the burgundy is deep and the fabric dense enough to be opaque on its own. No slip needed, and leaving it unlined is what keeps it light to wear.
Does it have pockets?
Yes, set into the side seams. They sit within the pleating so they don't add bulk at the hip.
Which size should I take?
Go by your bust. The sash shapes the waist and the skirt is cut generously through the hip, so neither of those decides the fit. There's no stretch in the fabric, so if you're between sizes, take the larger one.
How long is it, and where would I wear it?
Between 42 and 43 inches from the shoulder, so it falls below the calf on our model at 158cm — a proper midi. Buttoned up with heels it's ready for the office; sashed loosely with flats it's a weekend dress. Burgundy is forgiving enough for a long day and rich enough not to read as plain.
How should I wash it?
Gently, in cool water, and on its own for the first few washes — deep colours like this one release a little dye at the start, so keep it away from anything pale. Hang to dry in shade rather than direct sunlight, which is what keeps burgundy from fading. No bleach and no tumble dryer, and no iron needed at all.
